“This is probably one of the strangest la mian places I’ve ever been to,” remarked Rudi as we sat down at our small table in the long corridor entrance to the internet café and awaited our Ma Jia 羊肉拉面. The Huizu man from Lanzhou stretched the noodles with professionalism just outside his tiny kitchen shed beside a bunch of twenty-somethings taking a breather from their online games upstairs. Advertisements for video games and computer hardware were a stark departure from the standard la mian wall menus and pictures of mosques.

A Ma Jia-esque soup was served, peppered with a good splash of chili oil to liven it up. Small bite-size pieces of succulent lamb and fresh, green stems of spinach adorned our bowls and provided a pleasant change.

This little la mian eating corridor can be found on Dagu Lu, near the corner of Hebei Lu and beside the very comfortable-looking Snail Bar.
